Ben Affleck And Oscar? Didn't Think You Would Hear Those Words In The Same Sentence Again Did You?
Okay, either Ben Affleck woke up out of his Benifer coma and realised what in the world was I thinking with my career, or he has hired a brand new team of agents to mark his return to the big screen in a big way. Let me start by saying what in the world was he thinking with some of his choices. The man turned every movie he was in into some of the biggest disasters in movie history. It's amazing Hollywood even allowed him back in. We had Paycheck, Jersey Girl, Surviving Christmas, Man About Town and his greatest career move Gigli. Now usually you have the three strikes rule and you are out of Hollywood but not Mr Affleck. Instead of standing in front of the camera and destroying another project, Ben was smart enough to move to the back and evolve himself as a director. His first venture was the amazing (seriously I know I am speaking about Ben Affleck but watch it it is one freakin intense movie) Gone, Baby, Gone. It marked his return with a bang and made people notice that under the right influence this guy can do his thing behind the camera. But why am I talking about a movie that was made two years ago. Well hold your horses I'm just leading up to that. Ben has come up with the goods again with the buzz being that his new movie "The Town" has earned some great reviews and could be the front runner at the award season this year. The movie follows Affleck as a bank robber who starts to have feelings for a bank manager in one of his jobs which starts to comprehend his missions in Boston. It may sound like nothing special, but see the preview, this movie looks intense and screams visions of the movie, "Heat." And the boy sure has got the goods in his actors to back this up. Not only is Affleck directing and staring, but he has managed to snag Jeremy Renner from The Hurt Locker (once again I hate mentioning that movie due to the fact it beat Avatar, seriously but I guess this is the same place where they gave Ben Affleck a second chance), Jon Hamm who trades his usual get-up in Mad Men for FBI attire, Academy Award Winner Chris Cooper (American Beauty) as well as Blake Lively who was nearly unrecognisable from her Gossip Girl personality. So maybe Affleck has got it right this time. I for one will be checking this one out. I hope for his sake it is more like Gone, Baby Gone and unlike Surviving Christmas, which really I couldn't survive again even if you payed me. The Town open 14 October (Australia).
