In 1987, a film by Oliver Stone shook up the way we looked at money and the stock market and made it seem that anything was possible. That with money comes power. That greed was good. Wall Street was a huge success for Stone, so why make a sequel? The answer is simple. Why not use one of the greatest financial collapses this world has ever seen and put it into a new movie staring some of the best actors on the planet. It worked once, why not show the country what really happened to the economy mainly in America. This is the backdrop of Wall Street 2:Money Never Sleeps and let me say we really were (and maybe still) in a lot of trouble. I have to admit this movie brought to light what happened in the most extreme case of financial problems this country has ever seen, but did it actually show us more than we already knew? Let me begin.
Wall Street 2 picks up 23 years later. Gordon Gecko (Michael Douglas) has been released from prison due to insider stock trading (oops sorry I just ruined the first one for you, but geez when you see the preview it's kinda obvious) and is out to prove he still has it. Here is how it is going to happen. He is going to take on a new apprentice (Shia LeBouf) and make him do two things: find out why Shia's boss Louis Zabel (the magnificent Frank Langella) killed himself and the other to bring to light the economic downfall. Throw into the mix Gordon's daughter (Carey Mulligan) who is angry at her father for his abandonment and selfishness towards his family as well as Josh Brolin as the villain of the piece Brentton James who is one of the major players in the large investment banks (and could also be the reason Zabel killed himself) and the man Gordon believes is responsible for his downfall and you have a talented group of actors bringing to life a character driven piece superbly directed by the fantastic Oliver Stone.
Oliver Stone in my book is a director who loves to push the envelope (see Nixon, W etc). But sometimes he brings to light facts that his public already knows and shoves it in your face even more (which can be kinda annoying). But the man is a great storyteller (as he writes most of his own movies) and sure knows his genre. With Wall Street 2 he is hitting the nail on the head. He knows how to make you feel all the emotions in the stock rooms. From the heart pounding of the stock market to the sad sense of failure for the people whose lives are going to suffer the most. The man gets the best out of his actors and I must mention all seem to embrace the characters that Oliver wants out of them.
However, many things upset me in this movie. All through the movie I was wanting for Michael Douglas to turn back into the Gecko we all know and love. This was bugging me a lot through the movie. The character you love to hate just wasn't there until I thought it was a bit too late. The other thing I couldn't stand was Mr Stone made his audience feel a little stupid. By having Susan Sarandon (completely under used) as a woman who was meant to be the stereotype of all the dumb Americans who saw a chance to make a quick buck by buying properties by the bucketload was easily not a suttle message. It was a clear slap in the face attack on Americans who this happened to. Yes we know this happened, but people already are regretting it and have paid the sacrifice you don't need to humiliate them any further.
The last thing that bothered me was the pace. This movie was way too long. Don't get me wrong it was a character driven piece so I wasn't expecting Arnie to fly out in an army tank blowing everyone away, but it could have been edited to be a bit quicker and many things left out, especially the last ten minutes which I felt destroyed the entire vision of who Gecko really was. Don't get me wrong I really enjoyed this movie, but coming out of the cinema I don't know if I felt like the director had made me feel like a complete idiot due to shoving the world's economic problems in my face for two hours and showing how dumb mankind really is when it comes to global finances.
All in all I didn't mind this movie, but it's successor really was at the top of its game. It surely had all the right ingredients to suppress it, but maybe if this movie had of come out a few years ago the world would have been a bit more aware and panicked, instead of feeling like been there, done that, time to move on already. In my mind Wall Street 2:Money Never Sleeps never lifted past average viewing. It felt like it had potential to rise in stock, but seem to come up short. 7/10

Does Money Really Not Sleep?
It's Thursday and you know what that means? Movie review day. Last week my loyal followers I was unable to give my review due to being quite ill. But I am back and better than ever and tonight's film will be the sequel to the 1987 huge hit Wall Street titled Wall Street 2:Money Never Sleeps. I have been looking forward to this film for a while as I was a bit of a fan of the first one. Not only did it introduce the world to the inside world of the fast paced stock market, but gave the 80's a distinct feel where "Greed Is Good." But will it's predecessor still have what it takes to make a enjoyable movie or will it fall harder than ABC Centres stock portfolio? I will give my full verdict later tonight so stay tuned.

Kick-Ass Is About To Well, Kick-Ass Once Again
At the start of the year a little movie came out with a lot of buzz behind it. It was going to switch up the way we looked at superheros. This hero wasn't bitten by a radioactive spider, or born a mutant he actually had no powers at all. But he was inspired by his comic book hero's to go out in the world and make it a better place. He bought a costume on ebay and from there became KICK-ASS. Kick-Ass played by Aaron Johnson became an icon in the superhero world. It was critically hailed, but for some reason it didn't exactly light the box-office on fire. So why then has it been giving the go-ahead to have a sequel? I'll tell you. When it was released on DVD the movie, due to word of mouth, has became a cult classic. Not only did it have witty one-liners and some cool action scenes, but a young actress by the name of Chloe Moretz a.k.a Hit Girl became the favourite. With her bad ass moves and her foul mouth (trust me you haven't heard this much swearing unless you were a sailor) Hit-Girl stole the show (and the reason I started to enjoy this movie). I have to admit I was not taken by this movie. I mean I love my independent films, and superheros but I found Kick-Ass very boring. It was not until Nic Cage and Chloe showed up that the movie got its second wind for me. So now onto the sequel. It has been buzzing that it will be released in 2012 and will be called Kick-Ass:Balls To The Wall. It has been confirmed that both Chloe and Andrew are on board as well as director Matthew Vaughn. Matthew is currently working on the new X-Men prequel so hopefully this will start after that. So get ready boys and girls to once again root for the underdog and his foul mouthed sidekick.

Aliens Invading Earth. Doesn't This Sound A Little Familiar?
Back in 1996 a little film came out that made a killing at the box office, put Will Smith in A List territory and gave use the immortal line, "Today is our Independence Day." Yes it was Independance Day. The story about an alien attack on the world that saw humans fight back and win the race against the aliens. It's a guilty pleasure that many people still enjoy (yes I would be one of them). Fast forward 14 years and I have a feeling Hollywood may have forgotten that most of us have not died or had our memories erased as we all remember this movie, because a new movie coming out later in the year is copying the exact premise. The movie is called "Skyline." And here is the premise, and this is for real. A group of huge spaceships are hovering over the country when the decide to come down on many of the city's in USA. They are out for revenge and will destory the human race at any cost. Umm isn't that the plot of Independence Day? Are we really that stupid? There had better be a big twist in this movie because the movie going public is not going to flock to a movie that they can rent at Blockbuster for $3. Also, there are no big stars in this and I am highly optimistic that anyone is going to come out of this one as big of a star like Big Willy. At least call it a remake or something and get away with it like so many other movies, (I'm looking at you Nightmare On Elm Street, what the heck was that). Good luck guys, I just hope a alien has a amnesia ray and shoots it over mankind because that is the only way anyone is going to think this is an original idea.
Could Cameron Be The Best Filmmaker Alive?
To me, James Cameron is the ultimate filmmaker. Who else has shaped the way films have evolved in special effects to stories, to how we actually watch and embrace films. Cameron is solely responsible for the evolution of 3D film making which ever director is now incorporating into film. The man has taken the way we watch movies and has flipped it around making us now feel more involved when we watch them. The man literally built new technology so that the 3D movement could happen for films. The man to me is a genius. He may be known for his grouchy and perfection obsessed attitude on-set, but the man has a vision and has his reasons. He not only writes, but directs and produces all his own movies as well. Who else has both the number one and two highest grossing movies in the world? Umm Speilberg? I don't think so. It could have been maybe in the 90's, but have a think about it,when was the last time Speilberg had both a financial and critically successful movie? I can't off the top of my head, but I can list Camerons'. Let me explain my reasons for Cameron being the genius that he is. James Cameron burst onto the scene with Terminator (sorry I know his first film was Pirranha 2, but I am not acknowledging that). The movie captivated audiences about a machine coming back from the future to kill the mother of a soldier of the resistance. The movie was a huge hit and gave Cameron the mark that he deserved in Hollywood. Not only was it filmed on a tiny budget but it showed that this talented filmmaker could bring both a story as well as CGI to great new levels. Next up, Cameron embraced the Alien franchise (and my personal favourite) by writing and directing Aliens. As many people wondered where he could go with the franchise after the hugely successful first film, Cameron turned it on its head and made a full on kick ass hero out of Sigourney Weaver by making the movie about a group of elite soldiers rescuing survivors on a planet infested by Aliens. Aliens was a huge hit and many people including myself, believe it is still Cameron's best movie to date. Next up was The Abyss. Okay I have to admit, Cameron went on a different journey for this one, but still it was interesting, but really his only financial failure. One film did not get him down, as he returned to The Terminator franchise with T2 and once again wowed audiences with his story, CGI (that had never been done before, a man made out of liquid only Cameron) and once again, flipped the franchise upside down, (and also made Sarah Connor a kick-ass chick, is anyone else noting this that Cameron writes empowered women very well). The movie was a huge success. But where to go from here? Why not try the spy genre with your favourite action man Arnie in True Lies. It was a mediocre success for Cameron (though would be a huge success for any other filmmaker) but still it was a lot of fun, but not up to the Cameron we have come to love and expect. Following on from this is the movie we all know about, Titanic. The movie which made us go back to where it all went wrong for the passengers on that unforgettable night. It was a huge huge huge success, (even though I don't care one bit for it). It gave Cameron the directing Oscar he very much deserved as well as picture and many visual awards. It is still amazing how the man takes an idea but then takes it to the next level beyond people's expectations. The movie became the highest grossing film ever until... AVATAR. It took 12 years for this visually stunning movie to come about. Of course only Cameron could suppress himself in both the film making, writing and box office receipts. Avatar has changed the way we watch movies and became an instant classic in many peoples book. Avatar is Cameron back to his best. The action was amazing, the story line emotional as well as engaging and the direction like nothing seen before with his new technology. So there you have it. I think that gives you enough evidence to why Cameron is the best. I know you have all seen at least one of his movies. If not, what are you doing? Go rent them now and witness the genius that is inside this brilliant man.

Eastwood. Damon. Paranormal?
I have to admit, I think Clint Eastwood is a brilliant director and I am not just saying that. The man has hit hard on many genres and has brought out the best in his actors as well as the screenplay which he delivers with his vision. Let's see if you don't believe me. There has been Mystic River with an ending quiet horrific. Million Dollar Baby which saw Hilary Swank win her second Oscar and change the whole genre upside down from a sports movie to a full blown drama. Then there was Gran Turino which was brilliant and Changeling with Angelina which I am still haunted by. And these are all in the last few years. The man is unstoppable. Matt Damon can pull off many genres himself, including comedy, action (who can forget the Bourne movies) and drama (Good Will Hunting anyone?) But lately, I feel Matt has dropped the ball a bit. Unless he has been playing Jason Bourne his career really hasn't been that interesting box office wise or critically. Let's look at the evidence. The Informant was boring with a capital B (I couldn't even watch all of it) and Green Zone just seemed like Bourne goes commando. Well why am I talking about these two? In the coming months Matt Damon will be staring in Clint Eastwood's new film "Hereafter." Gaining much praise already the movie is about how death effects the lives of three people including a middle class worker, a french journalist and a school boy who lives in London. This is the first time Eastwood has done such a genre, but I'm sure the man can handle the challenge. Everything he touches turns to cinematic genius lately. This will be the second time Matt Damon has worked with Eastwood as the first time it gave Damon his second Academy Award nomination so the team does work well together. Also starring in the film will by Byrce Dallas Howard, Jay Mohr and Richard Kind. I for one will be checking this out as I am interesting to see Dirty Harry himself prove once again why no one can come close to producing quality cinema like the Eastwood. Hereafter opens later this year.
Autobots Get Ready To Transform Once Again
I have to admit being a child of the 80's I hold the Transformers franchise dear to my heart. I don't think there is one guy (and probably many girls as well, don't get mad yet ladies) that don't love the transformers. Tranformers are robots in disguise who protect planet Earth from the evil Decepticons. Well, when the live action movie was confirmed, I was ecstatic as well as frightened as I thought, "You better not stuff this up Mr Bay, because if you do I know that a lot of people will be coming after you." But Michael (that's Michael Bay the director, listen to me writing like I know the guy, I wish) did the unthinkable and made a movie which had all the elements of the cartoon. The movie made a killing at the box office being the biggest hit of 2007. But then something happened. He dropped the ball in the sequel. I mean it had all the right elements. Big action, fantastic special effects, the original cast, but for some reason it did not work (killing Optimus and not having him in half of the movie, there was your problem Michael). But people still flocked to see it, although many wish they hadn't. Okay, so it looks like third time will hopefully be the charm, as those robots in disguise are back. No details have been spilled yet as the plot is as top secret as what happens in a scientology meeting, but I can reveal I have seen pics from the set and let me tell you it looks like the action is going to be big as always. All the cast are returning, except Megan Fox (boo hoo), due to some remarks she made about the director (if you didn't know she called him Hitler, not smart Megan not smart at all). Joining them this time will be Patrick (McBoring in my opinion) Dempsey, John Malkovich and Academy Award Winning Actress Frances McDormad (Fargo watch it, it's brilliant). Okay Michael, we are giving you a third shot to prove yourself. Don't let us down, I'm not ready to send these robots to the scrap heap just yet. Transformers 3 opens July 2011.
Elementary My Dear Watson. We Are Going To Have A Sequel
It looks like when a movie has made a killing at the box office like Sherlock Holmes did in 2009, that the studios realise they have reinvented a franchise and are going to milk as much as they can out of it, (or if they ruin it they can always make a prequel). Well I'm correct with the buzz being that the studio has greenlit the sequel which is going to hit cinemas December 2011. All the cast will be back including Robert Downy Jr and Jude Law. Rachel McAdams has not been confirmed back, but the bad guy has been rumoured to be played by double Oscar winner himself Daniel Day Lewis. Directing once again will be Guy Ritchie who helmed the first one. No details on the story have been revealed but I'm sure in the coming months this will change. Okay, I have to admit I didn't care much for the first one. I loved the actors, I loved the premise, but something just didn't click with me. I found it a little boring in parts and sections just seemed to drag on a bit, plus I felt they didn't use Rachel McAdams to her best. She is a talented actress and the part would have been suited to someone less known as it was not a leading lady part. I know that a lot of people did enjoy it, but hey this is my blog and this is my opinion which I am entitled to. If you have been a follower, you will know that I love Robert Downey Jr but even him being on screen for two hours just didn't do it for me. I thought he and Jude were great as a team, but the movie just didn't work in my opinion. If they do the sequel right, and make the trailer interesting I know I will check it out, but if not, it is going to be case closed for Sherlock and me.

Vampires vs Werewolfs. This Ain't No Twilight Crap.
Leather, check. Moody dark atmosphere, check. Werewolfs vs Vampires, check. Kate Beckinsale, check. Get ready to rumble boys and girls as once again in the red corner we have the vampires, while in the black corner we have the werewolfs, and you know what that means, (no not stupid sparkling vampires) it means get prepared to watch Kate Beckinsale kick some butt in the new Underworld movie. Yes it has been confirmed that Kate will be back (thank gosh, cause number three sucked badly) in Underworld 4. I love the Underworld movies (not number three, did I mention that already). They were a surprise hit for Kate back in 2003 and spawned two sequels. Opting out of number three (good choice) Kate is back with number four. No word yet on who will direct, but rumours are buzzing that it will original director Len Wiseman. Other news is that they have not secured everyone for the sequel so at this point Kate is on her lonesome (poor Kate). Underworld come out before sparkling vampires and teen boys turning into werewolves. It was bloody, it had great action scenes and it brought leather back into fashion. It was cool in other words. It pitted vampires against werewolves in a battle that has been raging for many years. There is know other information yet on the fourth movie however, the rumour swirling around is that Selene has had her baby and casting is underway for her daughter (a kick-ass mini Selene where do I buy my tickets already). I for one can't wait for this when it hit cinemas 2012. Bring back the vampires who actually draw blood instead of confessing their undying love for them and not sucking their neck. If that was me, I would have put you out of your misery and staked you cause you certainly should not be calling yourself a vampire.
Grab The Panadol Cause Your About To Have Another Hangover
The breakout comedy of 2009 was definitely The Hangover. Not only was it one of the funniest movies of 2009, but it defied expectations of star power at the box office. Not one of the main actors were as the media dub "A List." They did not have a big action scene, and they were opening in one of the toughest box office seasons. But it came out strong not only critically and financially, but made huge stars out of Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha and my personal favourite Zach Galifianakis. It was only a matter of time before the studio new they were onto something and have jumped on board to make a sequel. Okay when I first heard this I thought, "how in the world are they going to suppress the original?" But I have to admit when I first saw the previews of the first Hangover I thought seriously not another gross out movie aimed at teenage boys. But I was wrong. I went along to see it and was in hysterics all the way through. What other movie do you know showed off Mike Tyson's comedic skills, brought Heather Graham's career back from the dead and had a real life tiger drugged? I'm not going to ruin it for you, but seriously do yourself a favour and rent it. Well all the cast are on board as well as the original director Todd Phillips, and I heard on the Ellen Show when Ed Helms was on that they were beginning shooting this week. The script is under guard with no word on what the story will be about this time. There have been rumours flying around that it will be set in Thailand, so let your mind go wild as you can just imagine what the boys are going to get up too. Let's just hope this is one sequel that will give you a throbbing headache in the morning but in a good way instead of nauseous due to thinking how could anyone make this rubbish. Well only time will tell when The Hangover 2 opens next year.

Teen Girls Get The Kick Ass Treatment
I know a lot of girls who enjoy action movies, but until now none have really stared anyone younger than in their 30's that they might actually be inspired by. I'm looking at the most obvious kick ass heroins Sarah Conner and Ripley (I know I love Cameron I can't help it). But coming up next year Zach Synder the visionary filmmaker who brought his unique style to 300 (which has resulted in many copycat directors ripping him off) as well as the under appreciated Watchmen will bring a bunch of up and coming young Hollywood actresses and put them in his new movie Suckerpunch. But this is not going to be a coming of age story, or a bunch of girls trying on a pair of traveling pants and recording their life stories about them. No, he is going to put these girls through their paces and make them bonofide action chicks. With kick ass moves, probably great tag lines and will be every bad guys worst nightmare. The story follows Baby Doll who has been put in a psych ward by her evil stepfather. As a way to escape the dread of the walls of the unit, she makes up her own reality. While doing this, she envisions an escape for her and the girls to be free in the real world where they belong. The movie will star the excellent Aussie actress Emily Browning (Lemony Snickets) Abbie Cornish (Sommersault bit of a theme with the Aussies Zach), Jena Malone (Stepmom), Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) Carla Gugino (Sin City), and Don Drapper himself Mr Jon Hamm. I for one am excited about this film. It may be the movie to finally break all these actors into the mainstream where most of them belong. I for one am hoping this movie will pack a mighty PUNCH!!!
Could This Finally Be James Franco's Breakout Movie?
As in a previous entry, James Franco has to be one of the most underrated actors there is in Hollywood. Not only has the guy tapped into nearly every genre in the movie world, but his screen presence is undeniable captivating. From his stoner persona in Pineapple Express, to his star turn as Sean Penn's boyfriend in Milk, to his action take in Spider-Man no one can deny the guy can't do it. So why has Hollywood not made Franco the big star he is today? Maybe it is him who has steered clear of movies which he might have thought were shallow or he really wanted to be the next Al Pacino or Robert De Niro and not be type cast. But come later this year, Franco could finally get the kudos he deserves as he stars in the new film being critically applauded in 127 Hours. 127 Hours directed by last years Oscar Winner for Best Picture (Slumdog Millionaire) Danny Boyle tells the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston who when climbing in Utah got himself trapped for 5 days in the canyon and needed to actually cut off his own arm in order to survive. I know a bit graphic right, but it is meant to be very well done and the buzz is Franco is deserving the praise from both the movie public and the man he is playing. I mean the guy is onscreen by himself for nearly two hours and is making a movie captivating. Now to me that screams talent. Hand him the damn award silly Oscar voters. If I was part of the committee I would just hand him the award even though I haven't even seen the movie. 127 Hours will be hitting Australian cinemas later in the year.
The New Breed Of Hollywood Actors
In an earlier blog I decided to give my take on the up and coming actresses. I thought it was only fair to comment on the new generation of male actors who are catching the attention and setting the box office on fire with their movie hits. Sorry, but there will be no Zac Efron or Robert Patterson. Don't care if they make millions at the box office, they have one look and one acting talent only (and I use that term very loosely especially in Roberts case. Dude see a doctor for that condition the depressed look has never been popular). Also, I will not be adding Michael Cera. He may be a pin up for the geek chic movement at the moment, but he is so boring as an actor that I don't even think he is acting but just playing himself in every movie.
Jesse Eisenberg - You probably don't know the name yet, but come this October everyone will know his face, as he will take on the role of the founder of Facebook in The Social Network. The film is receiving critical acclaim and will likely be Jesse's breakout role. Jesse though has showed his comedic timing with Zombieland and Adventureland and his dramatic chops in the independant films The Squid and the Whale and Roger Dodger. Up next will be 30 Minutes or Less, but I'm sure after the Social Network is released the roles will be flowing in.
Josh Hutcherson - Josh got his break in family movies inlcuding Kicking and Screaming, RV and Zathura. The boy though started to shine through in dramatic roles in the underrated Bridge to Terabithia (badly marketed by Disney it is not at all what you think it will be about plus bring the tissues.) But it was not until this year's Sundance favourite and just released in Australia, The Kids Are Alright, that this 18 year old really proved to break out of children's films. Holding his own against the greats Julianne Moore and Annette Benning, Josh proved he could tackle the dramedy. Next up for Josh will be a remake of Red Dawn.
Chris Evans - Chris has been around for a while, but I feel he has always been underrated. Proving he could handle a smart thriller in Cellular, Chris also proved his comedic timing in Not Another Teen Movie, and could also master the action genre in The Fantastic Four and also the Losers. Finally though, it looks like Chris is going to prove if he can tackle a large blockbuster as Captain America. Not only did Chris score the highly desired part off of some of Hollywood "IT" actors but will also reprise the role in the comic book collaboration The Avengers.
Shia LaBeouf - Shia to me either has the best agent in the world, or really has the X factor. Not one of his movies over the last few years have cleared less than US$100 million at the box office. You know Shia. He is the lead in The Transformers films, Indiana's sidekick in the last Indiana Jones movie and brought on the thrills in Disturbia and Eagle Eye. But now without any special effects or action moves, Shia is going to take on the challenge proving his is more than a one character actor in Wall Street 2. Pitted against Michael Douglas will be one hard challenge but I feel Shia is definitely up to it. Next up, Shia will once again be pitted against those robots in disguise in Transformers 3.
James Franco - I don't care what anyone says about James Franco the kid will never be type cast. I myself think he has the X factor and is one of the most underrated actors of his generation. He may have got his break in Freaks and Geeks, but he really leapt to leading dramatic actor in such films as Milk (which he was totally overlooked for an Oscar in my opinion) playing Sean Penn's boyfriend and In the Valley Of Elah alongside Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron. The guys range can go from action movies (see all the Spider-Man films) to comedy (see Pinapple Express and Date Night). But it is his new movie which finally may get the attention this young actor deserves in Danny Boyle's (Slumdog Millionaire) new film 127 Hours where James will be the only actor on screen (more on this later in my blog). To me, Franco is the best actor of his generation.
There you have it, my list of the hottest up and coming actors in Hollywood. These guys are all one's to definitely watch.

The New Breed Of Hollywood Actresses
Today I thought I would give you a bit of insight into the new who is who in young Hollywood and who you should take notice of cause the studios sure are. We all remember when Sandra Bullock, Hilary Swank, Anne Hathaway, Cameron Diaz and many more broke out and became bono fide box office stars. I know some of these actresses have been around for a while but it's really now they are getting the parts they deserve and are showing off that they are more versatile than past parts gave them credit for. Let's start with the women and I'm sorry but I am not putting Kristen Stewart on this list. She may have been in the box office hit the Twilight series, but man is she just so damn annoying.
Mila Kunis - Mila started out on That 70's Show as Jackie the annoying girlfriend of Ashton Kutcher. But due to her smart movie choices has become one of my favourite new actresses to break the big screen. Who knew under that irritating show she really was a interesting actress. Don't believe me check out Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Date Night, Book Of Eli and the movie she is getting rave reviews in Black Swan. Told you she was on her way.
Kristen Bell - Kristen started out in the shortlived but interesting and clever show Veronica Mars. Although the show seemed to be a little too smart for its audience about a private detective in high school the show was axed after only three seasons. But it seems every movie today is staring Kristen Bell. Gaining bigger attention in the hilarious Forgetting Sarah Marshall, she will soon be seen alongside Cher in Burlesque, will act with the greats Sigourney Weaver and Jamie Lee Curtis in You Again and will even be harassed by Mr Ghost Face himself in Scream 4.
Amanda Seyfried - Amanda was the scene stealer in Mean Girls playing the dumb but lovable Karen. Who knew she would be the breakout star of that film (we all know what happened to Lindsay). Well Amanda went on to really show her acting chops (and singing for that matter) against the greatest actress of all time Meryl Streep in Mama Mia. The film was a smash and made Amanda receive the attention she deserved. She followed it up with the love stories Dear John and Letters to Juliet, tried her hands with the smart thriller Chloe and will soon be seen in another thriller taking on a new take of the classic story Red Riding Hood. Keep going Amanda you are on a role.
Ellen Page - Ellen became the pin up girl for the repressed (but ever so hilarious) teen in the surprise box office hit Juno playing the title character. Before she was Juno, she scared older men everywhere with her turn in Hard Candy (rent it you wont forget her in that one). Ellen quickly followed it up in the underrated comedy Whip It as well as Smart People. I was a bit worried about Ms Page, as much as I loved her in all of these movies, girl was playing the same character over and over. It was not until this year's huge box office hit Inception that little Ellen had grown into a real actress with more depth than delivering witty banter. Placing her in one of the films major roles against the likes of Leo Dicaprio, Ellen sure held her own. Up next will be Peacock with Susan Sarandon and Super alongside Liv Tyler and my classic favourite actor Kevin (cutaa cutta Footloose) Bacon.
Emma Stone - I love this chick. She is one very funny girl. You may not know the name but you really need to check out her breakout role in Easy A. She held her own and made the movie hit all the right ingredients in my book. Check it out, it's fantastic. Not only did Emma turn in a hilarious effort in Easy A, before then she stole the show in Zombieland alongside Woody Harrelson and started to show her comedic stylings in House Bunny and Superbad. Up next for Emma will be Crazy, Stupid, Love alongside Steve Carell and Julianne Moore as well as Friends With Benefits.
Welcome to the new breed of Hollywood actresses. Embrace them. You may not know them right now, but check them out, you sure will.

Megamind or MegaDull?
Guess what? Another new animated movie is coming out. I know, I know, another one. We have been bombarded this year with new ones, some fantastic brilliant can't say one bad word about (Toy Story 3 I'm talking about you). While others didn't really light the box office on fire, (poor Shrek). Once again, come towards the end of the year (and to cash in on school holiday money) Dreamworks will once again be giving us their new animated tale, "Megamind." Okay here is the premise. Megamind (voiced by Will Ferral) has been fighting his nemesis the oh so handsome and totally into himself Metro Man (voiced by Brad Pitt, I guess Beckham wasn't asked), for decades until one day he actually captures him. What will he do now as his objective in life is complete? Throw into the mix a love story involving a reporter Roxanne (Tina Fey love you) and there you have the basic rundown of Dreamworks animated adventure. So here is my problem with this. I have seen the previews for this movie and it really didn't grab me. I for one feel like I saw this last year when I watched Dreamworks last original animated movie Monsters Vs Aliens. The premise looks pretty much the same. And I don't know about you, but Will Ferral is really starting to annoy me. I don't find him funny anymore, and quite frankly lately his voice is irritating me. I know that they are going to play on the fact that Brad (Mr I think I'm so sexy) is playing Metro Man (maybe Metro Man really stand for Metrosexual Man, I don't know I'm just making it up). The only thing for me that could pull me to see this movie is the voice of Tina Fey. I don't care if she is acting or voicing a character I love Tina (a.k.a Liz Lemon). But I don't know if that will be enough to get my butt on a cinema seat. Stay tuned, I may or may not be seeing this movie when it is out later in the year. Maybe Dreamworks will have better luck next year getting my attention with the sequel Kung Fu Panda (now that was a cool animated movie).
The Roommate - Single White Female For The Noughties
Remember Single White Female? The movie that shook single women everywhere to be weary about who they invite to share their home with. It was a major success in 1992 and made everyone scared shitless of Jennifer Jason Leigh. Poor Bridget Fonda, I bet she wasn't expecting such a psycho when she placed an ad for a roommate in the local paper. Well that was over 18 years ago, and I guess Hollywood is having problems generating new movies, as come next year a new movie will bring the chills about sharing your world with someone in, "The Roommate." Everyone's favourite queen B Leighton Meester will star as Rebecca. But you may think oh great is Leighton going to be the victim here? Guess again. Leighton is actually going to be the villain in this piece which I am very excited about. I viewed the trailer last night, and let me tell you she looks creepy. The story follows Sara who is bound for college with hopes and dreams. When she arrives she is put in the same room as Rebecca (Leighton). They become best friends and enjoy the lifestyle college has to offer. But everything Sara has Rebecca wants and will not let anything get in her way. Scary scary. The movie will also star Cam Gigandet (from every movie out now) Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights) and Alyson Michalka (Wild Cats). I for one will be checking this out, as everyone should know what they are instore for when they get a roommate (mwah ha ha ha ha).
Come On Katherine, I Think It's Time To Step Out Of Your Safety Zone
Is it just me, or is every movie Katherine Heigl is in nearly the same story over and over? Lets see, there was 27 Dresses where she was a single woman trying to find love. Then there was the Ugly Truth about a woman trying to find love. And in her last movie she played you guessed it, a woman trying to find love, but in fact finds love with a assasin in The Killers. Well guess who is sticking to her same genre once again? You guessed it, Ms Heigl. After being the most entertaining part in Greys (yes I admit I used to watch it) Katherine decided after a few mediocre successful films to leave the popular show and go to being a full bonofide actress of the movie screen. But unfortuntely, it might have been a bit premature. Anyway, enough bitching about Katherine. Her new movie as I was saying is called, "Life As We Know It." It sees Katherine playing Holly and after her friends are killed in an accident, she is given the duty of raising their child. But she is not alone. Not only have the deceased parents given her the duty, they have also given the duty to one of their other friends, Eric (Josh Duhmal - Transformers). With them both given this new responsibility, they are asked to live in the same home and share their different lifestyles together. And I think you know where this is heading don't you? Oh Katherine, maybe you need to hire a new agent. It's getting a bit boring, and we all know you can pull off the drama why don't you branch out? Even Julia Roberts lost her romantic comedy card with roles in Erin Brockovich, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Closer. But I know I am being kind putting her in the same league as Julia as to me no one wears the romantic comedy tag like her. I think though Katherine is trying to give her a run for her money. Good luck with that. Until you play a hooker with a heart of gold, I don't think the movie going public is ready to embrace you in this genre just yet.
Is Johnny The Hardest Working Actor In Hollywood?
Johnny Depp in my opinion is one of the greatest character actor of his generation. Not only has he impressed when he is dressing up in his wacky characters costumes, (Willy Wonka, Mad Hatter, Edward Scissorhands) but he would have to be the hardest working man in Hollywood. Gone are the days where he used to throw televisions out of hotel windows, and getting tattoo's of former fiances' names. A great actor has shone threw in many of his latest roles. In the next year, Johnny will have no less than 3 new movies coming out. And they are all of different variety. First up, Johnny will be donning his usual costume of himself for the role in "The Toursit." Staring along side him will be sex siren (and man eating) Angelina Jolie. Johnny will play Frank who crosses paths on his travels in Italy (could there be a more romantic city) with Elise (Angelina Jolie). But is it really a coincidence? The movie is a thriller that has been getting a good deal of buzz, and I'm sure that there will be some steamy scenes between these two. Next up will be the comedy animated film "Rango" directed by Johnny's Pirates of The Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. Johnny once again will play the title character of Rango who dreams of one day being a swashbuckling hero, but is actually put in the role when he is asked to help out a small down overrun by bandits. Oh did I forget to say that Rango is a chameleon. I have seen the previews to this and it looks very funny. The movie will also star the voice talents of Isla Fisher (yeah go the Aussie), Abigail Breslin, Bill (I was the funniest segment in Love Actually) Nighy, Alfred Molina and Timothy Olyphant. The movie will hit cinemas next April. And lastly, the only movie I really don't care much about, yes Captain Jack Sparrow is back with the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean. I don't know how this is being made, but I guess Disney really want to milk all the money they can out of this franchise. The last one didn't exactly burn up the box office or registered on many critics best movies (and I couldn't even make it through a half an hour of it). But hey it does have a few good things (remember I try and find the positives in every movie) my favourite Penolope Cruz will play his sidekick and will play a pirate herself. Also along for the ride is Geoffrey Rush (love him) Gemma Ward, and Ian McShane (oh what a pity no Kiera or Orlando and they were the best thing about the first three - enter sarcasm here) Well Johnny I do have to admit, you are one hard working actor. Although, I really have no idea why you felt the need to sign on for a fourth pirates I mean it doesn't look like you need the paycheck. But hey, I still think your great and well, two out of three ain't bad.

What's Next? Fockers Go To The Retirement Home?
Okay I for one have never been a fan of these movies. Meet The Parents did have it's moments but was very predictable. Meet The Fockers to me, was just plain bad and boring. The first half an hour felt like a lifetime, and until Barbara and Dustin turned up, I was ready to leave the cinema. These two classic actors made it passable to keep watching. but seriously I don't see the appeal of these movies. Yes, they have made a serious wad of cash and yes I guess that is why the next one was greenlit and will be hitting the cinemas come this holiday season. But guess where they are taking the direction now? Greg Focker and his wife are having a baby, and therefore the two families will now come back together for hilarious results (maybe or just predictable stuff to do with children, hmm let me think could there be chaos in the hospital or is toilet time going to have some classic jokes, I think I could write the screenplay) All the actors are back with the addition of new ones. Jessica Alba is going to be on board, same with Laura Dern, Harvey Keitel who will join Ben (every movie I act the same) Stiller, Owen (my brother is actually the talented one) Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand. Why Paul Weitz has come on board as director I have no idea? Maybe after his last flop The Vampires Assistant he needed a paycheck. This is the man who brought the hilarious comedy About A Boy to the screen. I for one will not be watching this. I gave up on the Fockers ages ago. To me all I would like to say to them is FOCK OFF. Enough already. Little Fockers opens 26 December (Australia).
We Will We Will Rock You. Freddie's Coming Back
No this is not about a new Freddy Kruger movie. No this is not about about the musical by Ben Elton that was a huge success. This is about the biography that has been buzzing in Hollywood about the life and times of Freddie Mercury and his band Queen. Of course you know the band Queen. I don't care if you are 15 or 50, everyone has heard at least one of their tunes in their lifetime. Come on Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions, Somebody To Love. Everyone has heard the larger then life muscial numbers by one of the most glam rock men ever to grace the music scene. However, Freddy was tragically struck down by the AIDS virus and lost his battle in 1991. So who is going to be playing the highly animated lead singer of one of the greatest bands ever? The buzz is swirling that the part has gone to Sacha Baron Cohen. Yes Borat himself. But before you go oh great, look at the factors that may have influenced the studios decision. Never once have you actually known who the real Sacha is. With his multiple characters never looking anything like him (Borat, Bruno, Ali G) we have never known ever detail about his personal life and therefore have never looked at him thinking, "oh he got caught shoplifting while doing blow while punching out a papparazzi, yeah this is exactly like his life why am I watching this movie." The man sure knows how to act with audiences embracing the many characters he has portrayed and the many disguises that he takes on. The only time he has ever looked himself was in Sweeney Todd where Tim Burton knew that the actor could take on a pivatol role in the film, and show off his singing chops. Thats not the only thing, look at Sacha and then look at a picture of Freddie Mercury. The man looks so similar that make-up is not going to have a difficult time. The dude is a great character actor so this may be Sacha's time to shine in a role that many people will hopefully embrace and enjoy the musical stylings of Freddy. The biography will delve into the back story of Freddie and his association with Queen. No director has been rumoured yet, but I for one want to know if this is going to ROCK or dye a sad death on delivery like a Amy Whinehouse concert.

Will This Finally Be Leo's Turn For An Oscar?
Leonardo Dicaprio in my opinion is one of the greatest actors of his generation. Yes he has made some not so great movies, (I'm talking about the Man In the Iron Mask Leo, what were you thinking?) But recently he has proven again and again that he is an actor with amazing talent. The Academy has sure noticed this. Lets see, he has been nominated for What's Eating Gilbert Grape (one of the best movies of his career ever, rent it and tell me otherwise) The Aviator, and Blood Diamond. But it is recently that Leo has made some of the smartest (and dare I say brave) movie choices of his career. I'm talking about Shutter Island, The Departed, Revolutionary Road and especially his latest release, Inception. Martin Scorsese thinks so as the brilliant director has claimed Leo is his new muse with a total of four movies they have collaborated on. But to me nothing compares to his role in Inception as the brains behind the mission of going inside peoples minds and implanting a memory that is not real. The movie touches on so many levels and Leo proves he has the acting gene to carry this movie off. Not only critically but financially as well with Inception becoming one of the highest grossing movies of 2010. He has shyed away from using his looks to lure the viewer (I'm talking about the craptastic Titanic) and entered territory that has established him as a real actor among the best in the game. Inception to me is one movie that stayed with me long after the final credits rolled and with not giving anything away feels that it is one of the best movies I have every seen. Leo along with the rest of the cast delivered big time and feel that they should be rewarded for their efforts. To me it could be fourth time lucky for Leo if the Academy do not recognise him for his work I will start to write abusive letters to them. And I am not the only one as I know his fans and movie public feel the same way. Inception has all the ingredients to prove to the academy that he deserves this award. I can not name one other actor this year who has challenged themselves in a part like Leo did in Inception (and correct me if I am wrong but I really can't think of anyone). So come this award season will we see Leo finally receive the award that he is destined for? If I was voting I would be ticking the box in his category for Best Actor I definitely would take this award vote more seriously than our last election, am I right Australian public?

Did Easy A Make The Grade?
I am going to start of this review by saying a big yes yes YES!!! I fricken loved this movie. I can't not write this to start off with as it was one of the most engaging, hilarious but with a strong moral story movie I have seen in a long time. It may come across as some dumb teenage high school movie in the previews, but I assure you there is something underneath it that will stick with you. It proves that a comedy in high school can actually be quite smart, and by placing the right actors on screen to express this through a strong screenplay definitely proves this movie has the goods to back up its title and I am clearly giving this movie a big solid A (if you hadn't already guessed). Let me begin.
What if you told a lie and that lie became bigger than you had expected? First you are getting what you want from that lie, but then it takes shape all by itself and suddenly the lie is not turning out how you wanted it to to begin with. Confused? Don't be. That is the premise for Easy A. Emma Stone plays Olive and does with so much enthusiasm and comedic genius that it feels that she was born to play the part, (and as my friend said later on, if she hadn't of been in it, the movie could have really f&^ked up). Olive is in high school and feels that she does not really exist. One day as she is talking to her best friend Rihanna (Alyson Michalka from Hellcats) in the toilet she comes up with a lie that she is seeing an older guy in college who she has had sex with. But this is completely untrue. When overheard by the religious teenage christian leader who wants to save everyone in high school Marianne (Amanda Bynes who is up there with Stone as a scene stealer) the rumour sets its course. Suddenly everyone is hearing about Olives exploits. One thing leads to another and Olive is starting to become the talk of the school and gaining popularity. When other unpopular guys find out about the lie, Oliver is their savour and pretends to grant them their wish of scoring with her in exchange for gift vouchers. This is where the movie hits its stride but also where the movie turns around the usual teenage fair. I am not going to spoil anymore but we feel both that Olive may not be getting what she wants and realise that lies do have consequences.
Where does the A come into it you may be asking? Well the whole concept of the movie is taken from the book The Scarlett Letter. In the book when the main woman is seen sleeping with the minister in the old days she was branded with a A, in other words people thought she was a hussy. This is interweaved into the movie as the book Olive is studying is The Scarlett Letter. So as Olive decides that this is her new outlook on life. She starts dressing provocatively and always has her A strapped to her outfit.
Okay I think I may have said too much but let me tell you this movie worked extremely well. I'm going to point out the supporting characters are fantastic. The movie drawed its biggest laughs from Olive's parents played by Stanley (who stole the show in Devil Wears Prada and came close in this) Tucci and Patricia Clarkson. This two combined were great and played off each other well. They are not like your usual parents and you love their support for Olive. Penn Badgley adds a nice touch as Olive's former friend who might end up as something else later on. Thomas Hayden Church (Spider-Man 3, Sideways) is classic as the teacher who actually seems to care about his students while making his class enjoyable and Lisa Kudrow plays his wife who may also have a secret of her own.
What worked so well in this movie was that all the actors took it upon themselves to make the characters their own and just had fun with such a sharp and witty screenplay by Bert V. Royal. He knew exactly what he was doing writing this movie, and stayed away from cheap jokes which would have brought the whole movie down. He is dealing with sex and teenagers and instead of going the gross out, foul jokes he has made it sharp and entertaining without bowing down to this crude level. Director Will Gluck's second film has all the right ingredients and he allows his actors to fully have fun with their characters but does not allow them to go off ad libbing lines which have become popular (plus also very annoying) in many movies (I'm looking at you Ben Stiller and Will Ferral, it used to be funny now its getting very boring, just cause you spit out a million words doesn't mean you don't edit them out of your movies later).
So to sum up Easy A passed all its grades in my book. It showcased the talent that I knew had been lurking in Emma Stone since I first saw her as the scene stealer in Superbad. This girl has talent as a comedian and as an actress. I think she is going to prove a real winner in this and I urge you to not fall in love with her by the end of the movie. This movie screams Emma Stone all over it. No other young actor could have made Olive so engaging and her comedic brilliance came through. Emma has handled her first big screen outing as a lead extremely well. I for one want to see more of this actress again. I just hope she will not be type cast. But at 22 I think she will be fine. Just please Emma, don't stick to these roles like Michael Cera has. We all know how annoying he has become. Easy A easily deserves the high marks I give it, and Emma you sure go to the head of the class in my books with this film. 9/10

Is Anyone Going To Turn Up For This One?
There is a quote in the Simpsons where Homer is caught in the third dimension when he trying to describe where he is and asks the rest of the cast if they have ever seen the movie, "TRON." No one says yes. It is a funny line which actually rings true. Tron was hyped up to be the biggest movie Disney had ever produced with the state of the art special effects for its time (come on it was 1982). However it failed to deliver. Tron was a huge financial mess with no one showing up making it a box office flop. The game of the same name did well though with many fans interested in playing the game just not wanting to watch the movie. The movie followed Jeff Bridges (who to me always talks like he is a stoner) who played Kevin Flynn who was transported into his own video game by a machine that he had invented. It is up to him to escape by actually being in the games that he wrote as a computer programmer. The movie in my mind was pretty cool especially the speed cycles. So why am I bragging about Tron when it is nearly 30 years old? Well the big news is come this December Tron has produced a sequel titled "Tron Legacy" which will hit cinemas in, you guessed it, 3D. The story will follow now Flynn's son who has been searching for his father ever since he went missing (sorry if I just ruined the ending of the first one for you but you didn't watch it 20 years ago I didn't think you would mind) who also will get sucked into the game and must rescue his father, however he will have to endure the same challenges his father faced. Sam Flynn will be played by Garrett Hedlund and Jeff Bridges will reprise his role. Also along for the ride is the excellent Martin Sheen, and Olivia Wilde from House. Throw into the mix the soundtrack completely done by Daft Punk and you have already caught my attention Disney. Watch the trailer and tell me if this movies doesn't look cool. I for one will definitely be buying my ticket to Tron Legacy hopefully for Disney's sake they can make a profit on this one, as the budget looks like it might cripple the mouses house if it does not perform. Tron Legacy opens 16 December (Australia).
Will This Movie Pass The Grade?
Woo Hoo. Thursday and you know what that means? Movie day. Well tonight's going to be a good one as I have high hopes for this movie. I'm going to see the hilarious Emma Stone in her first headlining movie, "Easy A." I really have a fondness for this actress and know she can pull it off. I laugh everytime in the preview so what is instore better be as good on the big screen. I don't know about you but I love high school comedies and when done properly can become classics, (I'm looking at you American Pie and Mean Girls). So later tonight you will have my full review. I'll keep you posted

Face Huggers. Chests Bursting. Acid For Blood. It Could Only Mean One Thing. Mr Big Bad ALIEN Is Back
When Ridley Scott's Alien came out in 1979, audiences witnessed one of the scariest movie villians in history. His name was Alien and he had razor sharp teeth, quick reflexes, and acid for blood. It was unlike anything audiences had seen in their movie seeing life. It became a huge hit and made a star of Sigourney Weaver (I think if she likes it or not, she is always going to be known as Ripley kick ass chick number one). A few years later it was followed by its successor Aliens directed by a relative newcomer James Cameron (you can't say that about him anymore). It was later followed by the mangled Alien3 and spawned a new direction for the whole franchise in Alien Reserrecution. The franchise really was losing what first made it appealing, and don't get me started on the Alien vs Predator movies, (what were you thinking 20th Century Fox). But now it may all be a thing of the past and the damage may be mended with the buzz being that the original director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Thelma and Louise) is back on board to direct the new movie which will be set before any of the events occurred before the first film. Okay you know the franchise is pretty dead when they go back in time to start the story again. Yes this one is going to be a prequal. Star Wars did it. So to is X-Men so why not the Alien franchise? Nothing yet on what the story will be about or if they will focus once again on Ripley but a name has been buzzing around who may be the lead actress. Gemma Arterton of Prince Of Persia, Clash Of The Titans, and the last James Bond movie has been rumoured to be scoring the title role. I feel she could definitely be up to the challenge. She can definitely carry herself on screen and also being already familiar with the action scene, Arterton could handle her self for the big action stunts that are bound to evolve from this film. Lets hope they bring all the right ingredients back to the franchise as it is a story that deserves to be told. Go for it Ridley. Do your thing.
I Hope You Deliver This Time Shyamalan
Remember where you were when you were awe strucked at the ending of the Sixth Sense (Bruce Willis dead the whole time, come on you so didn't know that happened). That movie gripped you right till the end and transformed Bruce Willis back into the mainstream and made audiences sit up and take note of a director and writer who may be the next Hitchcock. M.Night Shyamalan is his name. But something happened. He started to lose his way. Yes there were a few impressive ones, (Signs, Unbreakable) but nothing that really captured audiences attention. And the poor guy then went on to make the mistake of making audiences endure some of the worst films every produced. I'm talking about Lady In The Water and especially The Happening (trees making everyone go psycho and start killing each other, yeah great story there Shyamalan). Okay, now I might have been turned off his movies, and his name on top of a movie does not necessarily catch my interest, but the new movie which he wrote, called "Devil" has certainly won me over with the trailer. The concept of the story is that five people are in an office building when they all decide to catch the elevator. When all are in the elevator and it starts on its journey all of a sudden the cables come to a complete stop. What they don't know is that one of them is actually doing this on purpose and is starting to turn them all against each other because one of them is (da da daaaaaaaaa) the DEVIL. Okay it may sound stupid, but seriously youtube the trailer it is creepy and maybe the dude is a better writer than directer. Trust me he has taken one of my biggest fears of being trapped in an elevator and put the master of evil inside of it. I for one will be checking this devilishly looking movie out. Devil opens 2 December (Australia).

Ben Affleck And Oscar? Didn't Think You Would Hear Those Words In The Same Sentence Again Did You?
Okay, either Ben Affleck woke up out of his Benifer coma and realised what in the world was I thinking with my career, or he has hired a brand new team of agents to mark his return to the big screen in a big way. Let me start by saying what in the world was he thinking with some of his choices. The man turned every movie he was in into some of the biggest disasters in movie history. It's amazing Hollywood even allowed him back in. We had Paycheck, Jersey Girl, Surviving Christmas, Man About Town and his greatest career move Gigli. Now usually you have the three strikes rule and you are out of Hollywood but not Mr Affleck. Instead of standing in front of the camera and destroying another project, Ben was smart enough to move to the back and evolve himself as a director. His first venture was the amazing (seriously I know I am speaking about Ben Affleck but watch it it is one freakin intense movie) Gone, Baby, Gone. It marked his return with a bang and made people notice that under the right influence this guy can do his thing behind the camera. But why am I talking about a movie that was made two years ago. Well hold your horses I'm just leading up to that. Ben has come up with the goods again with the buzz being that his new movie "The Town" has earned some great reviews and could be the front runner at the award season this year. The movie follows Affleck as a bank robber who starts to have feelings for a bank manager in one of his jobs which starts to comprehend his missions in Boston. It may sound like nothing special, but see the preview, this movie looks intense and screams visions of the movie, "Heat." And the boy sure has got the goods in his actors to back this up. Not only is Affleck directing and staring, but he has managed to snag Jeremy Renner from The Hurt Locker (once again I hate mentioning that movie due to the fact it beat Avatar, seriously but I guess this is the same place where they gave Ben Affleck a second chance), Jon Hamm who trades his usual get-up in Mad Men for FBI attire, Academy Award Winner Chris Cooper (American Beauty) as well as Blake Lively who was nearly unrecognisable from her Gossip Girl personality. So maybe Affleck has got it right this time. I for one will be checking this one out. I hope for his sake it is more like Gone, Baby Gone and unlike Surviving Christmas, which really I couldn't survive again even if you payed me. The Town open 14 October (Australia).
Could We Have A New Kick Ass Heroine To Add To The List?
There are certain female kick ass action chicks who will forever be remembered for their tough ass take no prisoner attitudes. Ripley started the trend in Alien and then confirmed it with Aliens. Sarah Conner proved that a cyborg could bring out the killer in anyone and Lara Croft showed that a sexy chick did not have to stick to a stereotype but could prove that she was as tough as the boys. But there is one actress you might not think of when you think of action hero. That person would be the acclaimed actress Helen Mirren. Yes you heard right, Helen Mirren. The actress who won an Oscar for playing the Queen and who is usually portrayed in classic films. But coming this October, Helen may prove how versatile an actress she really is with her new movie, "Red." Red tells the story of a bunch of assassins who are past their prime and are now living in retirement. However, when a certain threat compromises there mission and identities it is up to Frank Moses to bring the team together and bring their nemesis down. The movie also stars the excellent Bruce Willis, the actor who I think never sleeps Samuel L. (Mr. Cool himself) Jackson, Morgan (I could read the Yellow Pages and still make it interesting) Freeman, Richard Dreyfuss, Brian Cox and Julian McMahon. The movie will be directed by Robert Schwentke who made the intense Flightplan and one of the most confusing movies I have ever seen The Time Travelor's Wife. But seeing a picture of Helen Mirren holding a machine gun has made me stand up and pay attention to this one. The woman looks bad ass. Trust me on this. Show them what you got Ms Mirren. Red opens 28 October (Australia).

There Are Some Movies In This World You Just Don't Remake
There are certain things one does not do in this world. Wear socks with sandals. Eat with your mouth open. Or remake classic movies. I am directing this to you Hollywood who is ready to start shooting the remake of "Footloose" (I think I just broke a wall with my fist upon hearing this). This is just the worst thing that could possibly happen to modern cinema. There is nothing wrong with the old one. It is a classic. Hear me a CLASSIC!!!. All the elements were right the first time and nothing can change that. Look at what happened to Fame. It sunk a bad death at the box office. Psycho was a complete waste of time and the new Nightmare on Elm Street was just plain bad (what was with the new Freddy's face?). Footloose is a classic. A piece of the 80's that will be forever remembered for the crazy dancing, the bad clothes and the outrageous plot (a town where no one is allowed to dance, its a bit far fetched but knowing America I wouldn't be suprised). The remake has had its bad luck already (maybe it is cursed hope so). Zac Efron was meant to be the lead but pulled out. Kenny Ortega who directed all the High School Musicals as well as the Michael Jackson documentary This Is It also left the project. Then it was passed onto Chace Crawford (of Gossip Girl fame) who later left the project due to scheduling conflicts (or he just came to his senses and realised this was the worst idea ever). Now it is with an unknown and seriously I will not be seeing this movie. You do not recreate this movie. The End. Enough Said. Please listen to the people. Do not let the boy dance. This is one town know one needs to experience again. Let it go.
Would You Take A Year Off Of Your Life If Given The Chance?
What would you do if you had everything, but did not actually find yourself fulfilled at the same time? Would you continue down the same path or would you one day decide to leave everything behind and find out what this world has to offer? That is the premises for the new movie, "Eat, Pray, Love," staring Academy Award Winner Julia (I will forever be known as a hooker) Roberts. Based on the hugely successful best selling novel by Elizabeth Gilbert based on events which occurred in her own life. If you haven't heard of the book or the movie for that matter it follows Liz (Robets) leaving behind her perfect life in order to experience and indulge and find a new direction for her meaning in this world. We follow her as she journeys to Italy (Eat) to India (Pray) and Bali (Love). Roberts will be joined on screen by a plethora of talented actors to bring this highly praised book to life on the big screen. James Franco, Viola Davis, Billy Crudup, Javier Bardem and Richard Jenkins. Directed by the extremely talented Ryan (Glee is the best show on television) Murphy who has already proved he can transform the words of an author to make a truly touching movie (see Running With Scissors great film) I feel he will do no wrong in bringing this book to the big screen. Given the right material Julia Roberts can really shine in a role (see Steel Magnolias, Pretty Woman) and by the looks of the trailer it looks like after taking a long break that she may be back in fine form. I for one want to indulge in Italy, Pray in India and Love in Bali all in the comfort of my cinema seat. Eat, Pray Love opens 7 October (Australia).
Downey Jnr. Galifianakis. Could This Be A Comedy Pairing Made In Heaven?
If you were living under a rock last year and have not heard of the hilarious comedy called "The Hangover" I urge you to run out and rent it. You will not be disappointed. It was clever, smart and exceptionally funny. Why am I talking about a movie that was released over a year ago? Well we all know who was the stand out in that movie. I am talking about Zach Galifianakis who played Alan who was going to be the soon to be brother in law (who also could not wait for more people to join his wolf pack, rent the movie and you will laugh why I have included this line) of the groom. Well he is teaming up with the best actor in Hollywood at the moment (and I mean that literally, the man can do know wrong in my book, I can even overlook his time in jail ) Robert Downey Jr. The two will be seen in the coming months in a new movie called, "Due Date." Due Date tells the story of of a highly stressed business man (Downey Jr) who has to hitch a ride with a flamboyant actor (Galifianakis) in order to reach his wife who will soon be delivering their baby. What will ensure will be a comedy road trip like know other. We all know that Galfiianakis is a comedy jem and Downey Jr sure knows how to make us laugh hysterically (watch Tropic Thunder for example) so this may be the next duo that may team up again and again. Throw into the mix Jamie Fox, Juliette Lewis and Michelle Monaghan and it sounds like a winning combination. But don't forget the director Todd Phillips who directed The Hangover and this is going to be one fun ride. I for one have already seen the trailer and I must say I was laughing already (lets hope they didn't show all the best parts) so I will definitely be strapping into my seat to watch this new comedy team work their comedy stylings on film. Due Date opens 4 November (Australia).

Yes Another Vampire Movie, But Don't Be So Quick To Write This One Off Yet
Okay, before you dismiss this movie after hearing the word vampire give me two minutes of your time (I'm just estimating how long it will take to read this entry) to understand that this movie may be not what you are expecting. The movie is called "Let Me In" and yes it is about a vampire. Yes, it is about her relationship with a human. But stop your negative groaning right there and listen. This one is about a young vampire named Abby who befriends a young boy named Owen. But this is where the liking to the Twilight series ends. This time there is going to be violence. There is none of this sparkle crap. The girl needs to feed and humans are her prey. Owen soon discovers that Abby is not who she seems, but she is willing to look after her friend whatever the cost, even though it could cost him his own life for him to live forever with her. Staring the scene stealer in both 500 Days Of Summer and Kick Ass (if she was not Mindy I would have turned that movie off) Chloe Moretz and Aussie actor Kodi Smit-McPhee (Romulus, My Father, The Road) and actor veterans Richard Jenkins (Burn After Reading, Step Brothers) and Elias Koteas (Shutter Island, Shooter) this movie has a lot going for it. Directed by Matt Reeves who directed the small budget but big at the box office hit "Cloverfield" we may be in store for something in the vampire universe we might not have seen before (and there better be blood). This is one vampire movie I want to sink my teeth into (pun intended) when it hits Australian theatres 14 October.

The Kids Are Alright, But Are The Adults?
This is a story about an unconventional family. A story about two children who have been raised in an unconventional environment. The movie is called "The Kids Are Alright" and let me tell you they are, but the parents surely are not. This is a family story with a difference. The difference being that the two children have been brought up by their parents who happen to be lesbians (ooo shocking) I just finished seeing this film and all I can say is I was very impressed indeed. No blowing up of cars, no stupid gags, no under developed characters, just a character driven piece that uses all the actors to their full talent to produce a smart movie about families in the noughties. Let me begin.
The story follows a family unit headed by the strong Nic (Annette Benning) and her wife (yes they are married take that supreme court) Jules (Julianne Moore) who have two children Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and Laser (Josh Hutcherson). Both parents have had a child each. Laser was conceived by Jules, while Joni was delivered by Nic. But how do two women have a baby? Hello, the only way they could was by both being artificially inseminated. And here is where the movie goes into a different territory than a conventional family. Nic and Jules are having problems in their relationship like every couple usually do when they have been together for over 20 years. They fight, they both have different personalities that seem to be clashing. Nic who is a doctor is a perfectionist on every level, while Jules is more the spiritual type who is trying to start up her landscape architect business. While they are involved in their children's life, there is one part they are not seeing. The kids behind their back have decided to seek out their donor to find out who really is their father. And here is where the movie hits its stride. Enter Mark Ruffalo as Paul who the children both want to start being involved with their family life. As I said this is not a conventional family story and to me it was definitely a breath of fresh air.
The movie is brought to life by the excellent direction of Lisa Cholodenko who produced the impressive "Laurel Canyon" (rent it, its a great film), who also wrote the screenplay. She lets her actors express her words well, and let them interpret and express how a new breed of families may have to face in the future. Straight or gay, without one half of the parental unit, a child will always want to discover what is missing and to understand the part they feel may be important to their development.
Let me talk about the acting. Everyone in this movie is terrific, and I must mention Annette Benning. This is one talented lady who has chosen some great films in her career. From American Beauty (which she should have won the Oscar, you hear me Mr Academy Man) to the American President to Bugsy to Postcards From The Edge, Annette delivers and never can be stereotyped. She brings a hard edge to Nic who in many ways is like a lioness protecting her family from a new member who she feels wants to destroy her family that she has built and does not want an outsider ruining this. Julianne Moore is the perfect balance for Bennings' character as we understand her insecurities and the way their relationship works due to the fact they look and act like a real couple. The children are exceptional. Josh and Mia are two young actors who handled the material well and showed what it is like for two children with two momz. There is no obvious jokes. There is just a great character driven piece. Mark Ruffalo is great as Paul. He embodies everything about his character and creates a comedic element as well as a key component to bring to the surface the problems that this family may be hiding underneath.
This movie has reveived a lot of attention in many film festivals and I can see why. It embodies a great character driven piece that takes the viewer on ride inside a same sex couple's family. To me, it is a lot more interesting than seeing the same "normal" (and I use that term loosely) family unit. It gets boring seeing the same story over and over, but this movie proves as well that same sex families definitely deal with the same issues as many heterosexual families. This movie is not a political statement and the director does not shove this factor down your throat. What she does show is that a family unit in today's day and age is completely different from 50 years ago. But an element still flows through. With loving support a family can deal with any situation that may arise. The Kids Are Alright, they surely are and this movie proves just that. 8/10

Behind Every Evil Genius There Really Is A Heart Of Gold
So I just got back from the cinema after seeing "Dispicable Me" and I must say I was pleasantly surprised.
As posted earlier, I was a bit hesitant about this one. I kept seeing previews for it and really was not intesterested but now i'm glad I did check it out. Dispicable Me hits all the right notes, and let me say even an evil genius can be won over by the love of three adorable children, even if he did have a black cold heart to start off with. But I think I am jumping ahead of myself. Let me begin.
Dispicable Me is the story of an evil genis Gru voiced by Steve Carell (I love this guy) who wants to pull off one of the biggest heists in the world. He wants to do the impossible and steal the moon (yes the moon, now if that isn't evil what is?) With the help of his extremely old partner Dr. Nafaio (voiced by the funny man Russell Brand) and his thousands of extremely funny yellow Minons (yes they steal the show) he sets out trying to conquering his task. But without any money to fund his new project until he can get his hands on the shrink ray, he sets out to get funding by the evil bank (yes even normal banks have evil banks). However, when he is denied his loan and his nemesis Vector (Jason Segal) steals the shrink ray before him, he trys everything to get it back. With no luck, he notices three young girls Margo, Edith and Agnes granted access to Vector's home due to them selling cookies for their orphange. Gru comes up with a plan where he will adopt the children and hatch a way for the girls to get robot cookies into Vector's home to steal the shrink ray. I am not going to tell you anymore but this is where it gets good.
What worked about this movie is it hits all the right notes. The children (especially little Edith) with their innocence would melt any person's heart (try not falling in love with her) and Gru is no exception. I'm not going to say that he is won over straight away cause that would be stupid and no point of the movie, but with hillarious consequences in a variety of scences Gru's cold heart stars to melt.
Carell pulls off Gru well with the support of the three talented young ladies who voice the young women in the movie. Jason Segal is at his annoying best as Gru's arch nemesis and Russell Brand is great as Gru's partner. The Minons although annoying at the start have some very funny scenes and are used to full effect.
The visuals in this movie are exception and I urge you to see it in 3D. The rollercoaster ride is worth the admission price alone. You literally feel like you are on a ride and be warned you may even feel your stomach drop. Director Chris Renaud has used the 3D to great effect to feel the scope of the whole movie. Being his first time in the director's seat after working on all the Ice Age movies, I feel he has really outdone himself.
But I did have a few problems with this movie, even though I feel I might be a little picky with them. Firstly, the Minions I felt were a bit of a rip off of the tiny aliens in the Toy Story films (I'm sorry I relate everything to Toy Story but it is my fav. movie). Even with the same sort of voiceing I thought they seemed all too familier. The only other thing was that it had a few scenes which kinda dragged. I mean I know its a kids movie which adults will also enjoy, but just a few spots lagged a little for me. I know these are kinda meaningless and I am probably being a bit too harsh, but hey I need to review how I feel when I watch movies and this is what sorta annoyed me about this one.
I would though recommended it. It has some extremely funny moments, and by the end if you don't love the orphan girls then you really have a cold heart. The animation uses large scales to its advantage to show the the dynamic of the way Gru thinks about taking over the world, and I must admit the storyline is very clever by changing up if an evil genius can also have a soft spot (hello Dr. Evil). This movie is anything but despicable. I don't know if Gru will become as famous as Shrek, Woody and Buzz but I feel he, like this movie, could grow on anyone with repeated viewing. 7.5/10
