Is 2011 going to be the comeback year for Winona Ryder?

Some actors do one unspeakable act which gets them shunned away from the film community and knocks them off their path to becoming a bonofide movie star. Mickey Rourke did it when he shunned Hollywood for a life becoming a boxer while also saying a few things to piss the studios right off. Robert Downey Jr. was on the path to becoming the finest actor of his generation, but then got involved heavily in drugs. The same happened to Drew Barrymore. Being outcast to renting out movies while working in a video store instead of staring in them due to her drug and alcohol problems. But all it took was one script that would put them back into their rightful place as Hollywood heavyweights. Rourke got the Wrestler. Downey Jr. got Iron Man and Drew Barrymore got The Wedding Singer. So now it is another 90's actress to come back from the bowls of Hollywood and make her way back up to her star making status. I'm talking about Winona Ryder. Ryder was one of the biggest stars of the  90's staring in some of the best films. Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Mermaids, The Crucible, Reality Bites, Girl Interrupted, Little Women and the list goes on and on. Ryder was in demand, but then due to enjoying five finger discounting at Saks Fifth Ave, it all came crashing down. No one would touch her. The roles dried up and she was outcast to star in low budget (in other words real crappy films) such as Sex and Death 101, The Ten and others which I would not watch myself. The last time she stared in a big picture was back in 2002 with Mr Deeds (not exactly ground breaking). But it looks like Winona is on her way up again (and it's about time). You may have seen her as Spock's mother in the new Star Trek film, but that's not going to be enough to get her noticed again. Come next year she is going to be staring in some big films. Coming up in January, Wionana will star in Black Swan (check past blogs for movie synopsis) alongside Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. Directed by Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) the man sure knows how to bring great material to people who he believes can deliver. So hopefully Winona will shine. Also in January Winona will star as one of the main characters in Ron Howard's new comedy "The Deliemma." Staring alongside Winona will be comedy duo Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, and we all know these two can deliver the laughs and the box office gold. So Winona here's to your comeback. I for one will be hoping you join the A List team of actors who have come back from the brink of obscurity. Go Ryder Go.

What would happen if no one believed you were, well, you?

I have to admit I am a huge fan of Liam Neeson. The man has a presence about him which lifts a movie above its somewhat mediocre material. Take for instance his action role in Taken, the script was simple about a man out for vengeance after his daughter is taken hostage and sold in human trafficking. Or take for instance Star Wars:The Phantom Menace. The best thing about that was Liam. Even his voice can do wonders to a movie, just look at the Chronicles of Narnia. Shit boring, but when Aslan the lion comes on screen the movie jumps forward to interesting (I for one wanted the Lion to be in the whole movie, who cares about the witch and the wardrobe). The man has the talent to tackle drama, as well as be believable as an action star (see A-Team if you don't believe me, one of the most underrated movies of 2010). So why am I talking about Liam and not letting you know why? Well come next year Liam will be staring in "Unknown." Unknown tells the story of Dr. Martin Harris (Neeson) who after waking up from a coma is told he is not who he says he is. Someone has done the unthinkable and stolen his whole identity, where not even his own wife (played by Mad Men January Jones) recognises him. With the help a stranger he sets about finding out what has happened to his identity. The movie will also star the amazing Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon) Diane Kruger (National Treasure) and Aiden Quinn. I for one can not wait for this movie. It has classic Neeson writen all over it. Unknown will hit theatres in 2011.

Are you ready to get yourself into a Tangle?

A bunch of animated movies have come out in 2010. We have had sequels (Shrek Forever After and the amazing fantastic can't say enough good things about Toy Story 3). We have seen new characters come to life and make us laugh (Despicable Me, How to train your dragon). And now it's Diney's turn (without the addition of the Pixar the best animated company in the world) to add characters to the mix with their new take on a old fairytale. But this one is not involving giant orges. Get ready for "Tangled." We all know the fairytale of Repunzel, who is locked in a tower and only a prince can come and rescue her as she has been given locks of long hair for him to climb up the tower. Well Disney has made a bit of a difference to the story. Instead of a Prince, it is now a thief who stumbles upon the tower and encounters the wrath of Repunzel. It is there she finally has human contact after being locked in a tower for many years. Sparks soon fly between them, but she must venture out to meet her true love after he leaves. Like all animated movies we have our main characters voiced by recognisable actors. Pop singer (Candy one of the best song's of the 90's) turned actor Mandy Moore will voice Repunzel, while "Chuck" actor Zachary Levi will play Flynn. Also rounding out the cast will be Everybody Loves Raymond's Brad Garrett, Arrested Developments Jeffrey Tambor and Donna Murphy (Spider-Man 2, The Nanny Diaries). I haven't been sold on the previews of this film, but reviews have been very positive over in the States, so maybe I will have to check this one out when Repunzel lets down her hair in January 2011(Australia).

Miley is bringing the LOL's in her new movie

It seems that the Hollywood executives have noticed a new trend amongst the general public. They are using ideas from the social media world and our executing them in new movies. Just a few months ago the public was given the true story (how much truth in it's uncertain) in the Social Network about the huge success and the changing way we communicate on Facebook. There are also rumours swirling that a movie will be made about Twitter (I still don't understand that concept myself) and now they are even using lingo to create films, like Ms Hannah Montana herself, Miley Cyrus in the new movie, LOL:Laughing out Loud. Miley is obviously trying to shake off her Montana personality (we all know how) but I have to admit she might have something going on. I for one did watch The Last Song (sshhh it was a good movie, don't boo me) and thought there is something about this actress that is waiting for some good material that she can really sink her acting chops into. LOL may be just that. Miley will star as Lola who in this new era does not have much time for family relationships and keeps them at a distance and really has become a stranger to her own mother. When her mum finds her diary explaining all the stuff (and there is some real naughty bits involved) she knows her daughter has started to slip away from her. Staring as her mum will be none other than age defying woman herself Demi Moore, Twilight girl Ashlee Greene and Thomas Jane will also star. Let's hope that the Cyrus can bring the LOL's to this movie when it opens next year. And also keep a look out for smiley face, love heart and blogger next year as well. Nah I'm just pulling ya leg. They haven't made those movies....yet.

Make sure to make a date with Robert and Zach. It's worth it

Buddy comedies have been around for ages. From Dean and Jerry to Albert and Costello, to Woody and Buzz the formula never gets tired. Put two different male personalities together and watch the magic of their adventures happen. Done right, a buddy comedy can prove a winning combination on film and at the box office. And that is just the case with the new movie, "Due Date." Staring the amazing and talented Robert Downey Jr and the scene stealer from The Hangover, Zach Galifianakis (trust me I have no idea how to pronounce it either) a new duo has arrived on film, and let me tell you these two bring the laughs hard and fast and have created a very, very funny film. Let me begin.

Peter (Robert Downey Jr) is on a mission to get home to his wife (Michelle Monaghan) who is going to be delivering their new child in a few days via C section. Everything goes to plan until Peter crosses the path of Ethan (Zach Galifianakis) an aspiring actor heading to Hollywood to get his big break in his favourite show Two and a Half Men as well as spread his father's ashes at the Grand Canyon. When boarding the plane to LA, Ethan makes the accusation that Peter could easily be a terrorist as he is using his phone when boarding the plane. With security jacked up so highly these days, Peter is taken down (in a very funny scene) and is now been banned from any flight. Also thrown off the plane is Ethan. Without any money or his luggage, Peter needs to make it home in time to see his wife give birth to their son and takes on the challenge of sharing the ride with one of the most annoying men you would not want to be travelling cross country with in a vehicle as well as his (fricken hilarious) dog Sonny. What happens next is where the film amps up the comedy and the actors shine in the situations the screenplay call for. I won't go into detail as I don't want to ruin it for you, but let me just say their are drug dealers, Mexican boarder patrol, drug use, car wrecks, cameos from Juliette Lewis (in a very funny turn) and Jaime Foxx all that add to the highlights of this movie.

The boys have done it again. Todd Phillips the man behind the surprise hit of last year, The Hangover, has made a movie that hits all the right notes of comedy. While being very smart how he does it, does not go for obvious jokes and allows his actors to have fun with the material. Yes there are a few low brow scenes, but not enough to make this a gross out comedy. Downey Jr. could read the phonebook and still make any movie enjoyable for me. His take on Peter is perfect. He displays the working class man, (complete with bluetooth ear piece), as uptight, angry and highly stressed out. He is the perfect match for the annoying but oh so lovable Ethan. These two have great chemistry and really know how to make the picture work. They bounce off each other very well and make their characters lovable and likable.

These two have done the film proud. Once again Zack Galifianakis is in my opinion a comedic genius. The man does not have to act stupid or over the top like many other comedic actors (I'm looking at you Will Ferrall). He is able to be extremely funny with just the way he delivers his lines. The man is on a role. I for one can't wait to see him in The Hangover 2. Downey Jr, shows that he knows how to handle any material and is on a role with his film choices. Todd Phillips should be proud of what he has achieved here. He has made a buddy comedy/road trip movie which is very funny, but also has some very touching moments without being too sappy. I did not have any negative things to say about this movie. It didn't run for too long. It was extremely funny. And I didn't think it was to over the top. These three should definitely come back together again. I for one would be writing that date in my diary. 8.5/10

Stephen Dorff is coming back stronger than ever

Stephen Dorff is one of those actors who had potential to hit the big league, but like many fizzled out after his biggest success. Yes I must admit, he has had a few hits, but none that would catapult him into A list territory. Getting his big break in the emotional charged drama, "The Power of One," Stephen was bound for great things. But for his big break came the crap movies. Fear dot com, Alone in the Dark, Cold Creek Manor and the list goes on and on. But lets not forget he did prove he still had it in films such as Blood and Wine, Blade and Public Enemies. But it seems someone saw his talent and decided to give Stephen his big comeback that he definitely is entitled to. The director/writer to do this is Sofia Coppola daughter of legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola (Godfather). Sofia has an unusal resume of films, ranging from the disturbing The Virgin Suicides to the dramadey Lost in Translation and the genre piece Marie Antoinette. But this time she is telling the story of Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) a high profile actor in Hollywood who decides to reevaluate his life when after the mother of his 11 year old daughter skips town he needs to find out how to balance his life and be a caring father. The movie is receiving huge praise from many film festivals and many are even predicting Stephen's name may even pop up come this award season. Stephen is joined by Elle Fanning (sister of Dakota) and Michelle Monaghan in this critically acclaimed piece. So Stephen my advice to you. Pick your next role carefully, because like Mickey Rourke and Robert Downey Jr you deserve better roles than you have been given in the past. Somewhere opens January 2011 (Australia).

Wahlberg is on a role this year

Mark Wahlberg is one of those actors who either has a string of big hits at the box office, or seems to be going into that territory where dropping his dacks and singing, "Good Vibrations," was the highlight of his career. You know what I am talking about. For every great turn in movies such as The Departed and Boogie Nights, we have had to witness a Max Payne or The Happening (I would fire my agent for those crap movies). But it looks like Mark is back on track with a string of hits this year and showing that he can do comedy is a new genre he can do extremely well. Date Night was hilarious and The Other Guys, Mark stood his own. But once again Mark Walhberg is going to tackle serious drama when his new movie, "The Fighter" opens later this year. Now don't  dismiss Mark on his work in drama as he has rocked parts in The Departed where he was nominated for and Oscar and held his own against the big league actor such as Jack Nicholson and Leo Dicaprio. This time Mark is going to be telling the real life story of Mickey "Irish" Ward, a boxer, who with the help of his brother, was able to go pro in the 80's, (think of Rocky and you will no the sort of story it is going to be). Throw into the mix Christian Bale (who never stops doing good movies) as his trainer whose life starts to turn to nothing when he gets involved in drugs, and Amy Adams (one of my favs and always brilliant) as his girlfriend, the combination looks like a winner. Many have predicted that this is going to end up on many award lists next year which wouldn't surprise me. With the talent involved, The Fighter is definitely going to take a hit out of the box office when it is released.

A new take on a old classic

Who would have thought Amanda Seyfried would have been the break out star of Mean Girls? I mean as Karen the girl that could predict the weather when it was actually happening (very funny scene), it wasn't exactly the role that would have many lining up to see what she did next. But she soon found her A List movie to catapult her to the next level in the business by staring alongside the legendary Meryl Streep in the huge hit Mama Mia. And with that Amanda was in demand. And rightfully so. The girl has talent. Amanda is on a role with the hits Dear John, Letters to Juliet and holding her own against such A List talent Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore in the independent film Chloe. But now she is entering a new genre of the thriller kind in the new movie and new take on the old classic, "Red Riding Hood." The story follows Valerie (Amanda Seyfield) who is living in a small town in medieval times when people are starting to go missing. There seems to be some suspicious behaviour as it seems (here comes the old school story). A werewolf is killing them off one by one. It seems that the wolf is one of their own. But who? And will Valerie (Red Riding Hood) be in danger next? Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (of Twilight fame) and also staring Gary Oldman, Virginia Marsden and even the very talented and always great actress Julie Christie, Amanda is sure in good company for this new telling of on an old fable. Red Riding Hood sinks it's teeth into theatres next Autumn 2011 (Australia).

Yes there is going to be a sequel to Valentines Day

Earlier in the year a movie came out that pitted the "whose, who" of Hollywood A List in Garry Marshall's romantic comedy "Valentines Day." The movie starred old school actors alongside up and comers. It gave Julia Roberts a third time teaming up with her Pretty Woman/Runaway Bride director and brought her back to the genre we love her in. Not only starring Julia, but we had Shirley Maclaine (who always steals every movie she is in) Hector Elizondo (who is in every Garry Marshall movie, try not spotting him in one) Jamie Foxx, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Garner, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Queen Latifah, Topher Grace, George Lopez and the scene stealer in my opinion Anne Hathaway. I must admit I was a fan of this movie, even though it was an Americanised version of the British film, "Love Actually." But hey it did its job, it was entertaining and in my mind very funny (especially Anne Hathaway who if she ever fails in the movie business can easily become a sex phone operator, you need to watch the movie to understand this). Although some of the stories didn't work, like all Garry Marshall movies, it's a bit of fluff with a good heart behind it. The movie made big bucks around the world, and so it comes as no surprise that a sequel has already been given the green light and will be set in, you guessed it, New Years Eve (also this is the working title). Like all sequels it is going to follow the same formula of the story but this time even bigger stars are rumoured to be involved. include my fav Michelle Phiffer (the coolest) Robert De Niro (the best) and Hillary Swank. We also have Lea Michaels (Glee), and Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine)on board. Rumoured celebs names also being thrown around are Halle Berry, and Reese Witherspoon. Looks like the sequel is bringing the big celebs to town to let us witness the lives of people on New Years Eve. And I think you can guess when this is coming out. That's right, next year towards New Years Eve. I think we have a new franchise on our hands.

By the hammer of Thor

Okay I have to admit, I know who Thor is, but I don't know who Thor is if that makes sense. I know that he has a hammer and that he is a strong warrior and he is a god or something but that is about it. So why am I talking about a comic book character that I have no idea who he is or what he is about? Well next year we are going to be inundated with comic book movies again (I for one am excited, but a lot of people won't be to them I say, oh well go watch something arty farty) and "Thor" is going to be given the big screen treatment. Here is what I have gathered from the story. Thor lives on a planet (or a cloud) or wherever God's live and is cast off to live on planet Earth (as you do). But the strange thing is with his unique powers he becomes the saviour that planet Earth is looking for to defend from the evil forces. So that's the story. So who may you ask is playing the title character? Well for everyone who has ever watched Home and Away (a very popular Aussie soap for all my international readers) the award has gone to Chris Hemsworth. For my international readers he played Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek. But don't fret he is in good hands with an Oscar winner onboard Sir Anthony Hopkins, an Oscar nominee Natalie Portan, and an accomplished actor/director Kenneath Branagh. Let's see if the Marvel studios can make Thor become as popular as the biggest achievement Iron Man, because come 2012 he will join forces with the rest of the Marvel cast for "The Avengers." (Read previous blog for what that is all about) By the hammer of Thor will smash into cinemas May 2011.

Cowboys and Aliens. It could work.

I don't know about you, but Cowboys and Aliens are the last two things I would put together in a movie. Aliens are usually seen as being cute or destroying the world and cowboys are seen to be riding off into the sunset with a big western scenery. But Hollywood has decided that these two concepts are going to come together in the new movie titled (wait for it) "Cowboys and Aliens." (Clever huh?) This movie has all the right ingredients to make it a box office hit. Lets look at the talent. We have a veteran action star in the form of Harrison Ford, the new James Bond who knows how to kick some ass, Daniel Craig. The movie is pproduced by the dynamic pair Ron Howard and Brian Grazer who have done some of the biggest movies in the last few years and a hot action director who made Iron Man one of the most popular comic adaption movies ever, Jon Favreau. Throw into the mix Steven Spieldberg as the executive producer and it looks like this team have a winning formula on their hands. The story is set in the old west in the 1800 when cowboys and Indians were at war over the land when a mysterious man appears out of nowhere. With the village up in arms over who this man is they are not ready for the real threat that is coming their way when an alien spaceship starts to invade their town. Their only hope is the stranger who has wandered into town. And I guess here is when the special effects will come into play and the action starts. Get ready to pick your side when Cowboys and Aliens opens Winter 2011 (Australia).

Two movies coming out next year with the same concept, only in Hollywood

Every year Hollywood studio's battle it out to make the best blockbuster movies, but seem to be using the same storyline, but with different actors. But do they honestly not think the viewer realizes this? Lets look at the evidence of movies which came out the same year and with the same concept. Deep Impact and Armageddon. Two movies about meteors crashing into Earth and destroying us all. Then we had Mission to Mars and Red Planet. Two movies about exploring planet Mars. We also had Volcano and Dante's Peak. A disaster movie about volcano's destroying towns. And the list goes on and on. Which brings me to my next point. Next year we are going to be bombarded with two movies about casual relationships in 2011. One will star Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher the other will star Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake. One will come out in January 2011 the other late September 2011. It will be a battle to find out which one will rein supreme at the box office. Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher star in "No Stings Attached" about a girl and a guy who only want the physical without all the emotion attachments relationships bring. But guess what? One wants more and there is the premise of No Strings Attached. Now for the premise of "Friends with Benefits." Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake star in Friends with Benefits about two best friends who decide to get physical and wonder if their friendship will survive. Hmm sounds very familiar. I for one will probably check out the Mila Kunis version of the movie. Not only do I think she is on fire with her movie selection of late and a darn good performer the movie will also star Emma Stone (reason enough already) her Easy A co-star Patricia Clarkson, Woody Harrelson (one of my fav's) and even Jenna Elfman. See the trend in Hollywood continues. It usually is a case of which does better at the box-office that decides which studio will win out with their version. Both movies open in 2011.

Could the Hangover 2 get any cooler?

I don't know about you, but The Hangover 2 has already sold its first ticket. That's right I am already buying mine to see if they can make number two as good as the first movie. Why may you ask am I already sold on the new sequel without even seeing any photos from the set or even a trailer? Well that fact is when has a movie ever had an American President have a cameo role in it? I can't remember for the life of me. The Simpsons maybe, but that's animation. That's right, rumour has it that none other than President Bill Clinton has a cameo in the new movie. How cool is that? The possibilities are endless as nothing has been said of what President Clinton will be doing in the film. But knowing that all the boys are back as well as the action being set in Thailand this time, the mind boggles to what the writers have instore for the viewer. Throw into the mix the adding of Liam Neeson to the cast who replaced Mel Gibson in another cameo (and thank you smart Hollywood money makers for that) this movie is shaping up very nicely. Also on board is Juliette Lewis, Jaime Chong and even Mike Tyson is rumoured to be coming back to the screen. But who could forget Mr Chow (Ken Jeong) the naked little Asian man who jumped out of the boot to which the boys were going to be hassled by for most of the film. Well he is back as well. I don't know about you, but 2011 is going to be a good year for a Hangover.

Tony Scott is back in fine form

Tony Scott is a director who knows how to make fast packed action movies. Like his brother Ridley (also an excellent director), Tony has a very unique style where he pushes the limit of film making and always uses new and different ways of editing his movies. He makes movies which may be lame in story, but makes up for the fact that they are fun, fast and definitely entertaining. You may not know the name, but I am sure you know the films. Top Gun, Beverely Hills Cop 2, Domino, Enemy of the State, Man on Fire and Spy Game just to name a few. The man sure knows what he is doing. And that brings me to his new movie, "Unstoppable." Unstoppable is Tony's new feature staring Academy Award winner Denzel Washington and up and comer Chris Pine (Star Trek). The story follows an engineer (Denzel Washington) and a young conductor as they join together to help stop a runaway train full of toxins heading right for a town where it could easily destroy if the train is not stopped. Sounds a bit lame, but with Tony on board the action will be fast and the direction will be exciting. Already receiving some of his best reviews in years, (I didn't care much for his last movie The Taking of Phelam 123 sorry Travolta you just didn't cut it for me in that movie) it might be the start of the excellent string of movies to come for this exciting filmmaker. Also staring Rosario Dawson, Kevin Dunn and Ethan Suplee Unstoppable hits theaters early next year.

RED is the best colour for an action movie

What do retired folk usually do when they give up their job and decide enough is enough? They usually travel, take up hobbies or have a mid-life crisis. Well then what do CIA agents do when they are told time is up you are no longer needed and retirement is your only option? Well we get to see exactly what they would do in the hilarious action/comedy movie "RED." Throw in hard as nails action man Bruce Willis. Add some crazy in the form of John Malkovich, then add a pinch of Morgan Freeman and don't forget to sprinkle with some Helen Mirren and you have all the ingredients to making a successful and hugely enjoyable movie. This movie for me was more than I expected and let me tell you I wasn't the only one in the cinema who joined this group for a crazy ride. But I better hold up as I need to explain the movie. I am just so pumped from this film. It's awesome. Let me begin.

Frank Moses is an ex Black Ops secret service agent who has taken up the life of retirement. He wakes up every morning, puts on his bathrobe, takes his trash out, does a bit of exercise and watches the clock tick away on his life. The only joy he seems to get is calling up the social security office and talking to his favourite operator Sarah (the hilarious Mary-Louise Parker). He starts to embrace her chatting about books and life in general, destinations to visit etc. Frank wants to meet Sarah and lets her know he is going to be in town the following week. This is where the fun begins. Waking up early in the morning, Frank stumbles down the stairs only to realise a group of agents are out to get him. With his house now fully destroyed (in one of the most over the top action scenes) he heads out to get the help of Sarah. It seems someone is out to finish Frank off from a previous mission and hot on his tail is CIA agent William Cooper (Karl Urban) with direct orders from someone in a higher position to eliminate Frank. With Sarah in tow, it is time for a bit of extra help from his old pals Marvin (the amazing John Malkovich), Joe (Morgan Freeman) and Victoria (Helen Mirren). It is with their help he is going to find why they are after him, and why it is connected with a murdered journalist, the American Vice President and an arms dealer (Richard Dreyfuss).

This movie is why I love cinema. It is extremely well done, and really I couldn't wipe the smile off my face at the end. All the acting is tops. I can't single one person out. Bruce Willis was perfect as the soft spoken, but highly dangerous Frank. John Malkovich was so crazy and out of this world, you couldn't stop laughing (the pink pig bit was a particular favourite). Morgan Freeman showed his gentle but tough side, and let me say the surprise act was Dame Helen Mirren. Gone are shades of the Queen and in comes a tough ass chick who could give women and men half her age a run for their money (and let me tell you there has never been a cooler chick to have a machine gun in her hand). The director Robert Schwentke should be pleased with his final product. Coming back after such a stupid movie (The Time Travellers Wife) he has made a movie where audiences will love every minute of it, from the sharp comedy coming out of all the actors, or the pumping soundtrack which adds to the excitement, or the over the top (and I really do mean that) action sequences he couldn't have changed a thing for myself to enjoy this movie anymore than I did. He not only showed how tough CIA agents are, but also that it's never too late to find love, never too late to still enjoy what you love in life and to always embrace it.

I can't think of a single moment where I didn't love this movie, and I'm not going too. I have seen a lot of movies this year, but too me it's like Hollywood has woken up and gone, lets make over the top action movies fashionable and fun again. No wonder they were able to line up such a talented cast for this movie. Everyone looked like they were having the time of their lives in it especially Mirren (she looked a little too comfortable with a machine gun, but she sure looked amazing with it). RED to me set out to do what is was supposed to do. Make the audience just have fun and enjoy the role with these retired CIA agents and it worked. I for one want to see these guys back again. In my mind now, CIA old retired agents seem like the best kind to make a movie about. RED is out now. 9/10

The American. The first truely awful movie of 2010

Last night I had the opportunity to see an advance screening of the new George Clooney movie "The American" at the Brisbane International Film Festival, and all I can say is it is my contender for the worst movie of 2010 and my all time personal contender for the worst movie I have ever seen. I have seen my fair share of movies (I think you can gather that since I write a blog about my passion) but I have never wanted to walk out of a movie that thought being so called "artistic" was a way to hide such a boring, awful, go nowhere movie. I sat in the theatre for two hours and came out going, "what in the world was that even about?" I'm sorry to the fans of Clooney, but what you are about to read is not kind and I warn I can't help it. I have never wanted two hours back in my life so badly. People complain about all sorts of bad movie I mean I usually agree (I'm looking at you The Happening) but for people to think that artistic movies are the way to say, "oh so different, it means this, or the lighting in the scene was to show his internal emotions" can just go shut up. There is nothing artistic about this movie. It is Hollywood and Mr Clooney trying to be too smart for his audience and trust me I am not the only one who thought this. Let me begin.

The plot. Well was there one? I still am unsure what this movie is about. But here is a quick rundown of what happened. Clooney at the start is shot at in Sweden. We are left to wonder why has this guy got a gun, and why has he just killed two hit men? It turns out Clooney is an assassin who wants to get out (which takes about 60 minutes to even find out) when he contacts, I guess you could say, his boss (even though it is never mentioned) Pavel (Johan Leyson). He must help a woman Mathilde (Thelka Reuten) with one last job. So he goes about building firearms (had no idea that he could do but apparently he could just whip it up) for her to end his association with the business. Throw in a hooker, a priest and his desire to leave Sweden for Italy and there is the plot. It MADE NO SENSE.

Here is where the problem lies. Clooney and I will blame him for this crap. When looking at Batman and Robin that film is Oscar worthy compared to this piece. As I was saying before, taking 45 minutes to show me Clooney pout, snarl, not utter a entire line, do push ups, work on a gun, drink wine and coffee, sleep with a hooker is not a movie. There is no plot. There is no understanding of the back story and there was not one character who you could even remotely connect with. The pace of this movie is so bad I fell asleep three times. I swear I could see my arm hair grow faster than the running time of this movie. It is awful. And you might be going, but isn't that what arty movies are meant to be?Trust me I like art house movies, but they don't try to be too smart for an audience. This just makes the audience feel dumb for paying for this shit.

George Clooney you should be wanting to get this piece of crap off your resume fast. If you don't do another Oceans, you may have to resort to asking for a job back on television where you started off on. You may have an Oscar, but your choice in movies lately is just really well, stupid. The only movie I thought of yours in the last two years that was worth mentioning was Fantastic Mr Fox (hilarious movie rent it) and you were only a voice in that. Please don't insult me again George Clooney. This was just plain bad, and even if you think it is art, it's not. It is just a smokescreen for you to think your audience is dumb. I couldn't even care about writing about the director as if I was him, would really want to destroy ever copy and remove my name from this picture. This is seriously the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. I hated it if you hadn't already gathered that. I know in my blog I am meant to appreciate all kinds of films, but there is not one single thing I liked about this movie. If I ever see George Clooney he better pay me forward my $13 bucks I spent on this crap. 1/10

What is going on with Tim Burton?

Tim Burton is up there with my favourite directors. The man, in my mind, is one talented bastard who is totally original and brings to the screen new characters and worlds than many of his colleges. But lately I feel he has been letting me down (and I know that I am not the only one) Tim Burton if you don't know the name (what is wrong with you then, the list I am about to mention, do yourself a favour and watch them) directed Edwards Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Batman, Batman Returns (still in my opinion the best Batman movie ever) Mars Attack, Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood and many more. But notice then I didn't list a few that really do not need to be mentioned. Don't get me wrong I love the guy, but his new movies are so unoriginal that I am having trouble liking them, when I should be loving them, like his past efforts. I am talking about Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and don't get me started on Planet of the Apes (love Wahlberg, just hate that movie). Yes, I admit he does bring his own take on the remakes and yes they are unique and quirky, but they are not Tim Burton films. There is nothing original and I must say, I even wanted to walk out of Alice in Wonderland it was just so boring I could have left and come back several times and still would not have cared about the movie. This is a  man who used to be so on the money that the thought of what he was going to direct next would automatically have sold me. But not lately. I try and remember the good times and I wish he would as well. I know that I am being a bit harsh on Burton, but when you come to expect something new then standard filmmaking I have to be a bit upset. I know he will come back. Just a word of advice. Stop doing movies with Disney before the title and you will have my business back.

Bourne without no Damon. What's the go there?

I don't know anyone that does not like the Bourne movies. They are smart, intelligent and extremely entertaining. Matt Damon brought his all to Jason Bourne who is trying to find out who he truly is while being hunted down by the organisation who created him into one of the best assassins in the business. Damon showed that he could truly move away from dramatic roles, and was fully capable of becoming an action star. Well we thought we saw the last of Bourne in The Bourne Ultimatum but apparently that isn't the case. A new Bourne movie is in the works, but the only problem is Damon has not been cast again. What did he do wrong? I don't think anyone hated him in the role as everyone thought he was perfect as Bourne. But hey it's not only the public finding this out via the social networking world, but Damon himself found out via the net. So I guess even in Hollywood secrets are hidden from actors as well. Oh well. But is anyone going to believe anyone else as Bourne than Damon. I myself am a huge fan of Damon with great performances in so many movies. So why is the studio ditching their main star who has brought in millions of dollars with three films in the Bourne trilogy? I can't answer that myself, but it's up there with why Spider-Man is getting a reboot when the last film made millions and was only made a few years ago. The world of Hollywood is weird and so are the studio heads who are playing with fire when they change casting of a loved character (I'm looking at you WB for putting George Clooney in the bat suit). But hey it may work, it may not only time will tell when it is released.

The Loved Ones. One F&^ked Up Movie. But In A Good Way

I must admit, I had no idea what this movie was about when I first received free tickets to go to a screening of this film. I went about doing some research on the web and found out that it had been doing the rounds at a few festivals, had a guy from Eclipse as the lead actor and that it was an Aussie horror film. Okay, I thought it might be interesting and with a catchy review quoting it as "Pretty in Pink meets Wolf Creek" I was intrigued. As I sat back in my chair I was not at all prepared for what I was about to watch (and let me just say in many places I was ready to walk out). But the more I have taken in absorbing the film (and also a Q& A with both the director and one of the most vicious and disturbing characters ever created) I suddenly changed my opinion. The Loved Ones is one Aussie horror movie that you will not forget anytime soon. Let me begin.

Brent (Xavier Samuel - Eclipse) is a young man in his last year at school. Earlier in the year though, Brent had been driving with his father and suddenly due to seeing something (or was it someone) had a accident hitting a tree and killing his father. Living with the guilt and his alcoholic mother, Brent decides to do what he usually does and gets high while searching the small outback town. As the senior dance is upon them, Brent is going with his steady girlfriend Holly (Victoria Thaine) although a loner girl who has a crush on him Lola (Robin McLeavy) wants him to be her date. On rejection Lola is quickly annoyed and sends about her Daddy (John Brumpton) to quickly make him her date. What becomes next is not for the faint hearted at all (Let me just say it involves knives, power tools, salt and hot water) Brent is abducted and taken to Lola's home, being strapped down and forced to endure plenty of painful torture by both Lola and her Daddy while being Lola's date for her school dance taking place at her home. As time starts to run out, will Brent survive? Will Lola have her perfect dance? Will Holly find her date? You will have to see to find out.

This movie is disturbing to say the least, but also had some genuinely funny moments. The acting is amazing and shows that Australia has got much talent. I can not praise enough Robin McLeavy. This actress has so much going on for her, and let me say she scared the shit out of people in the cinema. While speaking with her at the Q&A this shy, normal twenty something girl just proved how talented she really was on screen, because becoming Lola would not be an easy task. She gives enough twisted and sinister creepy emotion to Lola that it takes a strong actress to really give people the creeps. Think a cross between Kathy Bates in Misery and Jennifer Jason Leigh in Single White Female and you have Lola. Xavier Samuel is another young actor to watch. This kid goes through so much pain in this movie you feel for him, but also can't wait for him to get his sweet revenge. The pain this kid goes through is not for the faint hearted.

But I'm not going to forget the director Sean Byrne. As writer and director Sean has used elements of old school movies (like the Evil Dead series) to bring back the old school horror. Using no CGI and instruments that you would not think could be so painful to watch in a horror movie, he takes you to the edge of your comfort zone without pushing the envelope too far to completely lose his audience. This guy has talent as proving with a shoe string budget you can give an audience chills and scares to rival those of a big Hollywood blockbuster.

Don't get me wrong though, as I said at the start of the review therewere many times that I wanted to walk out of the cinema. In some parts it was so over the top and gruesome I thought this is just plain disgusting and really why am I watching this. But there was something there that kept me watching, and I really think it was the amazing acting of Robing McLeavy. Listening to the Q&R of the director and main star Robin I was moved by their passion for the film and I understood more the vision they were trying to bring to the screen and with that they gained a bit more of a positive influence to my viewing of the film. All up I have to say I didn't love this movie, but I do feel that it is a worthy movie to be placed in the Australian cinema field. Lola in my mind is going to go down as one of the scariest characters to ever grace a horror movie. This chick is nasty and I ain't holding back here by saying she is one crazy f*(ked up chick. The Loved Ones may not be a fantastic film, but it sure is one you are not going to forget in a long time. Trust me on this. 7/10
